Summary
Dorothy Rowe is a psychologist and writer. Her books include The real meaning of money. All her work is based on the research into the operation of the brain and the senses of perception which shows that, since we are physically incapable of seeing reality directly, we are always engaged in creating interpretations or meanings. Since such meanings can come only from our experience, and since no two people ever have the same experience, no two people ever see anything in exactly the same way. It is on this basis that Dorothy Rowe analyses why we behave as we do.
Vast sums of donors’ money have been wasted because the donors did not take the time and trouble to understand how the people they wanted to help saw themselves and their world. Gaining such an understanding usually threatens the donors’ world view, and so they prefer to believe that they know best. We often see the same thing happen in our personal lives.
I was ill recently, nothing life-threatening but it was quite debilitating with intermittent bouts of severe pain. Two friends, separately, chose to help me. Without asking me, the first friend decided what it was that I needed. I found myself side-lined and, from the way she was treating me, I feared that my friend thought that I had become senile. Meanwhile she created havoc around me. Finally she departed, and I was left to pick up the pieces. The following week, still ill, I went to visit the other friend. She listened carefully to my account of my illness and she observed me closely. She learned very quickly to see the change in my expression that indicated that the pain was returning. Then, without fuss, comment or advice, she made everything simple and comfortable for me. We lived quietly, talking when I wanted to talk, being quiet when I wanted to be quiet. When I expressed an interest in having some soup she unobtrusively prepared a bowl of soup that was nourishing and comforting. She laughingly assured me that making soup was a selfish act because there was nothing she enjoyed more than cooking for other people. I left her home feeling comforted and physically much better.

In tracing a theoretical history of modernity peculiar to Imperial Berlin after 1871, the urban themes developed in the writings of the German social theorist, Georg Simmel, have proved to be particularly pertinent. The exhibition of 1896 provides Simmel with a major site of investigation into the visible effects of the commodified urban sphere upon the individual city dweller which finds one of its most spectacular forms in the rise of the mid-nineteenth-century ‘World Exhibition’. The paper outlines aspects of Simmel's theories of the differentiation of the individual in the capitalist metropolis as a background to an investigation into the various functions assigned to the 1896 Berlin Trade Exhibition both by its organizers and by Simmel.

Hypomania can be considered as a defence against anxiety, a reaction to the patient's perception of his environment. Perception of the environment in a particular way can ensure the maintenance of a depression (Rowe, 1970). If hypomania is a defence, the cessation of the hypomanic state should mean that the patient then perceives his environment differently.

In Personal Construct Theory (Kelly, 1955), a person is considered to describe and predict his perception of the world by using bi-polar constructs which form an integrated system. In clinical practice it is possible to elicit from a patient not only a description of his environment in his own constructs but also an account of how he uses his construct system to predict future events. The following study shows how an assessment of the patient's construct system is useful in evaluating the outcome by therapy.

In therapy the psychiatrist is concerned to understand how the patient views himself and the significant people in his environment. It is of some importance to develop objective measures of the accuracy of the psychiatrist's understanding of the patient's world. The Repertory Grid offers a suitable technique.

A continuing problem in the care of patients suffering with depression is the assessment of how depressed the patient is, and how the level of depression changes over time. In clinical practice the patient is used as his own control, but the psychiatric assessment often has to be made in ways prone to the errors of subjective assessment. The psychiatrist is interested in how the depressed patient views himself and the world around him, that is, in terms of Kelly Personal Construct Theory, what constructs the patient uses to structure areas of his life and where on these constructs the patient sees himself. Personal Construct Theory and the Repertory Grid Techniques provide a useful framework for idiographic estimates of change.
